Mental Health

Creating this website is a brain rehabilitation project.  My neurologist said "...writing, when done in a scheduled-regimented-below metabolic threshold method, can also serve as a brain rehab. Improving, retraining higher levels of brain functionality is one way to get the gut working better, get the immune system under control, and get back on track. But, it must be done in a logical controlled progression like a physical rehab program."

Hearing this gave me so much hope and inspiration. You see, Genetically I've always had the mutation that created my hemiplegic migraine. But it was extreme over-work of some specific areas of the brain that led to me damaging the mitochondria in my neurons.

To put it simply, I brained so much that I broke my brain. But now I can maybe brain a little bit to get my brain back up to braining a little more often.

I have always been a total geek. I was the high school valedictorian. I have a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Chaos Theory and Social Change. I spent a good portion of my career analyzing an mapping complex systems.  I created diagrams called system maps like the one shown here that had to be printed on sheets of paper that were 4 feet by six feet.

During the span of my 15 years with a federal land management agency I developed lots theories, designs, models, and diagrams. There were many iterations of these products and a good deal of what I created was simply never used because it was called "ahead of its time."  I think that was a nice way for people to say "Holy cow! What the heck is she talking about? She's crazy!"

As a long time lover of efficiency, when my neurologist suggested that I write a book I decided to harvest my old products and creations and organize them in a more dynamic format so that I can see how many things really would fit into a book.  This website is the container and it is divided into seven sections, each one reflecting on of the seven dimensions of well being. Doing it this way allows me to see progress and productivity more often. Writing a book can take years and the gratification is far removed from the effort.  I wanted my brain rehabilitation project to include instant gratification.
